DG ITEC Conference

On Wednesday 19 November, DG ITEC hosts a conference in the European Parliament in Brussels.

Keynote speaker of the conference is Geert Jan Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton is the Secretary-General of the Dutch Senate, and will share his experience of bringing mobility to the Dutch Senate.

The conference also features a panel discussion on the subject of using ICT to improve the communication with citizens. The panel is staffed with four MEP, including the current and previous Vice-President for ICT of the European Parliament.

The conference will be opened by Giancarlo Vilella, Director-General of DG ITEC. The closing remarks for the conference are for Vice-President Adina Ioana Vălean.

Giancarlo Vilella has been Director-General of DG ITEC since April 2011. He was born in Italy where he studied Political Sciences and Law, and joined the European Parliament in 1990. Vilella is Professor of European Law at Marche Polytechnic University, and is the author of several books and essays on Public administration and on the European Union.

Geert Jan Hamilton has been Secretary-General of the Dutch Senate since September 2006. He was born in Holland where he studied law. Before taking up his current duties, he played a pivotal role in the redesign of Holland's mandatory health insurance scheme. As an expert in the field, he has published several books and essays on health insurance.

Rainer Wieland has been a Member of the European Parliament since 1997, and Vice-President of the European Parliament since 2009. Rainer Wieland was born in Germany and was the Vice-President responsible for ICT from 2009 until 2014.

He was rapporteur of the Parliament's LIBE committee's inquiry into electronic mass surveillance, and he is currently chair of said LIBE committee. Adina Ioana Vălean is a Member of the European Parliament since 2007, and the current Vice-President of the European Parliament for ICT. Adina Ioana Vălean was born in Romania where she studied European Integration and Security, Homeland Security, Defence Management and Mathematics.
